Chairman Brown Supports National Wear Red Day
In a show of support for raising awareness about heart disease, the DC Council is joining the American Heart Association (AHA) and thousands around the nation today for National Wear Red Day. Members and staff have been asked to wear red and help to inform others about AHA’s efforts to stop the progression of the number one killer of women.
“This is one of the most important women’s health issues of our generation,” said Chairman Brown. “We can make a difference if each of us gets involved by volunteering, donating, learning about this disease, and sharing that knowledge with our mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, and friends.”
According to the AHA, you should know these FACTS ABOUT HEART DISEASE:
- It is the No. 1 killer of women age 20 and over, taking the life of approximately one woman every minute.
- More women die of heart disease than the next four causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer.
- 1 in 3 American women die of heart disease, compared to 1 in 30 women that die of breast cancer.
- Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.
The Heart Association’s Go Red For Women campaign wants women across the country to make it their mission to fight heart disease by building awareness and inspiring action.
